Thanks for taking the time to post these instructions. They were a big help in fixing my IXUS 750. New screen cost £16.50 from ebay and arrived in 10 days from Hong Kong.

Thanks for the series of excellent pictures, this gave me the confidence to get my Ixus 30 working again (message to self: never put camera in back pocket before sitting down). Mishaps along the way were not being able to get the 7th screw out and as a result the old screen cable broke when pulling through. However by feeding a piece of parcel ribbon through the gap and slightly flexing the backlight I was able eventually to pull the new screen cable through.

Thanks for these very detailed instructions!!! I ordered the LCD online for about $45 from Amazon and it actually works. The tricky part for me was the post it ripped. I suggest using a stronger piece of paper. I had to take the carriage off and work the lens ribbon through with tweesers. BUT, it worked and I got my camera back.

I am so glad your posted these instructions on how to install a new lcd screen. I have a sd400 and it help to have these tips. One thing I did that scared me at first was pull the connector to the back lite loose, but, it plugged in the same way the screen did and it was not a problem. It was a little trickey getting the screen disconnected from the back lite but, that was the only problem.

Thanks again

Thanks, I just changed the LCD screen on a SD450 I picked up on E bay for $34 shipped. The LCD screen cost me $25 shipped, for a grand total of $59 for this nice camera. I followed your directions for the SD400, and the only other thing I had to do was remove two screws holding the camera mount base on. That let me remove the cable without the need of paper and tape to thread the new cable in.

I Just fixed my SD400 with a broken screen (keys in my pocket broke it!) I bought a parts camera on Ebay for $29 with a bad motherboard but good screen. I replaced the whole backlight\screen assembly instead of separating the two. That involved one more tiny ribbon cable but was doable with patience.

Really appreciate the help, thanks.

Thank you so much for posting this. I've just fixed my camera using your instructions! I'm over the moon.

I paid £260 for my camera about 4 years ago. I was quoted £190 for equivalent replacement last week and "£170 could be more" to repair it from a camera shop that wasn't at all keen to do it.

In contrast I bought the replacement screen from ebay for £28.99 and didn't pay for shipping took a couple of weeks to arrive from china though.

So I think I've saved at least £140! thanks :)

I've just fitted it and it works a treat. I used sellotape instead of post it note as suggested in comments above. Although now I look at it the dental floss method looks interesting.

it was a bit fiddly at times but it is doable.

This is exactly what problem i have with my camera. I will look to see where i can get the new screen to start the process. If i decide to take it to a camera shop any idea what my cost would be? What a great site with pictures, this is a great solution and help for anyone. Thanks a bunch!!!

Wow, that rocked. My wife wanted to buy a new camera. For $65, we basically got a new life on this baby. There were two problems along the way. Getting those clamps off was a real pain. In the process, I pulled out the ribbon connecting the backlight to the camera. It was clear enough how to put it back in, but it was a tiny little bugger and not fun. Took a few tries, but I got it. Nice method with the post-it notes. You should really post something here that says "You can try it yourself, or send it to me and I'll do it for $50"! Thanks again!

Success :) despite 3 main tribulations:

i) The backlight ribon came out of its socket. Resolved by plugging back in and clipping down its lid.

ii) My LCD took a while to seperate. Kinda linked to i).

iii) My bit of paper snapped!!! Resolved by curling the strip of paper with sciscors so it moves in the right direction when poked through from the back.

I took my screen from my friend's broken camera. Many thanks - you saved me buying a new camera, as I like my IXUS 50.

Thanks for the instructions. My new screen was $39 on Ebay and they referred me to a YouTube video which was not half as good as your instructions! I used clear packing tape doubled up instead of the post it and it worked great. But the filters came off the backlight and I may have reversed them, the screen may be a little weird. However..it works great and now I don't need a new camera. YOU ROCK!!

Thank you very much for these instructions! I too had a little problem getting the cable all the way in (and thus having a white screen) but I eventually got it. $44.80 for the LCD by getting a damaged camera off of Ebay and my camera is back!

Thanks very much.
Great "do it yourself" project.
The only thing is when I turn the camera on, all I get is a blank white screen.
Anyone have any ideas as to why?
Thanks in advance.

Also, for anyone looking for repair tutorials on different models, try this:

http://camerarepair.blogspot.com/2007/11/fixing-or-replacing-broken-lcd-screen.html

It is how I found the page we're on right now, but just in case anyone missed it, it has youtube videos and more. Thank goodness for the Glorious Interweb! These sites saved me hundreds of dollars in repair costs.

Oh my god, I fixed it, I fixed it!!!

I got my part from Canon parts & service. It was $65 or so with ground shipping: 732-521-7230.

*I would recommend using a piece of mylar for the lead instead of paper. The paper I used tore initially.

Also... after I first installed the new screen, the camera did not power up. I recharged the battery, although the camera was powering up fine before replacement of the screen, and after recharging, the camera works! Electronics are so weird. I guess the lesson is just to keep trying different things if you don't get the right result at first.
